What’s the Common Denominator for SUCCESSFUL Businesswomen?

The Common Denominator is They Embrace Their Power…

Oprah calls it the “AHA Moment”. I call it the Jean Grey Effect. If you’re familiar with X-Men, you’ll understand in a moment. If not, just follow my flow.

Every woman’s journey to greatness starts somewhere. But the day she truly feels freedom, is when she steps into own her power.

It’s a point where you are so confident in your own skin, and confident about your company’s ability to deliver stellar results, that nothing anyone can say or do will fluster you. It’s knowing the greatness you possess AND knowing how to utilize it.

Karen’s 3 Tips

  • Do assessments of what you know and your comfort level. You have to be comfortable with where you’re putting your money. Research the company you’re planning to invest in thoroughly. Make sure you understand the industry, company and/or product. And always do your due diligence on the founder(s).
  • Pace yourself because it doesn’t happen overnight. You shouldn’t be jumping into investing without getting proper training. Making investments aren’t guaranteed and you can’t expect a return quickly. Prepare to be all in for at least 5 years.
  • Establish criteria for your investment strategies. Don’t start investing without a plan. Understand your risk tolerance, expected ROI, the industry, the market and what you want your portfolio to look like. Stick to your criteria and do not deviate unless you have an absolute solid reason. You can make the occasional exception, but as a rule. stick to your strategy.

Episode 13: Fueling Next Level Growth

You’re past the startup phase and now it’s time to shift into high gear. So why are you still functioning and making decisions as  if you’re in startup mode? Many high growth companies end up stalling out because they remain stuck in startup mode. There are a variety of factors that keep entrepreneurs from growth from the mental to the financial. What they often lack is solid strategy and execution. At each level, there are new requirements that replace previous requirements. What worked when you began may not work in year two or year five, or even year 10. So what’s holding you back from growth?

Well today it’s all about the strategy, baby. Today’s topic is all about making that transition from startup to focusing on long term growth strategies and the importance of conscious awareness of each level of growth. My guest and I will talk about some of the roadblocks to growth, how to condition your mind (and your team) for growth, address some tips about handling growth at different levels and helping you set your path to rewarding growth for your business.

Janis’s 3 Tips

  • Focus on where you’re going. You have to have a clear direction of where you’re going. Articulate that direction to you team, professional advisors, investors, vendors and other key stakeholders. It’s important that your customers also understand. When everyone’s on the same page, it’s easier to achieve your objectives.
  • Set metrics to measure how you’re doing. You can’t understand where you need to make changes if you’re not measuring your metrics. You should not just be measuring how much money you’re making, but also customer satisfaction, costs of production/manufacturing, turn over rates, employee performance and growth milestones. Your metrics will help you identify problem areas and show you where you’re going.
  • Don’t slack on the execution! Don’t be the type to talk about it. You can make plans, but if you don’t execute you won’t achieve much of anything. Building the right team is crucial to the execution. You should make sure to get people who understand the vision and have the capabilities to bring it to fruition.

But it’s best to take the time to read it for yourself. Since we never know who to believe when these bills are put forward, we must do our own due diligence and read everything for ourselves. And if you can’t read it yourself, get a tax expert who can, and then disseminate the information for you. It is important that we all understand how this plan affects us personally and in business, now and in the future.

Stacy’s 3 Tips

  • Diversify your clients. You should have B2B, B2C and B2G, with no more than 40% of your business coming from B2G. You cannot count on timely  or consistent payment from government contracts so it’s better to have a diversification of clients and client types. That ensures that you don’t find yourself losing money or without revenue for months on end.
  • Hire someone to handle your grant writing and/or contract bid process. Don’t try to complete the process alone or try to take the cheap route. By having someone who understand the process, the lingo and the landscape of government contracting, you will save yourself a lot of time and heartache, and avoid major errors that can get your application or bid rejected. Invest the money in hiring someone, and invest the time in research and due diligence to make sure you hire the right person.
  • Invest in building relationships. Don’t overlook the power of relationships. There are people behind those titles and offices. Networking is extremely important. Because there are hundreds of bids and contract applications coming through, you should do something to make yourself stand out. Network with key people who can mentor you and tell the truth. Don’t take up too much of their time. By looking to build authentic relationships, you’ll end up with allies that can advocate on your behalf.

Episode 10: Don’t Call it a Come Back

Episode 10: Don’t Call it a Come Back

Many companies make the mistake of adopting the “business as usual” approach. Although they may have great success, eventually the new car smell wears off. Remaining popular, in demand or a top favorite brand with customers is not easy. So the savvy CEO knows that it’s critical to always be evolving AND paying attention to external signals. Some of you favorite brands have miscalculated their longevity, misjudged market trends, and made assumptions that ultimately killed their business. Will you be like them? I hope not. Tune in today to find out what brand killers to avoid, how to keep your company in the front of customers minds, and how to avoid becoming obsolete..

I also talk about several headline makers about companies who were once viewed as promising rising stars, who experienced very real wake up calls, and how you can avoid the same fate for your company with smart decisions, careful planning and getting help where needed.

My 3 Tips

  • Keep your ear to the ground and eyes wide open. Stay ahead of the curve by paying attention to what’s going on in your industry, complimentary industries, the government entity that affects regulation, what’s being portrayed in the media, and consumer sentiment. They are the key indicators of what’s to come and what’s to go. We have so much on our plates each day, that it may be hard to keep up with everything. Set alerts based on keywords or phrases that will trigger your attention. Appoint team members to researching and watching specific indicators. Ask for a consolidated report each week so you at least have a cursory view of what’s going on. Talk about it with your team. It’s important that they understand these things too.
  • Anyone who believes that the way they’ve always done things have brought them success and will continue to are the ones in for a rude awakening. I often use McDonald’s as an example when I talk about clarity, continuity and customer experience. Yes it’s true. They are known as the hamburger place. The sell more happy meals than the number of babies being born each day. But they started paying attention. They paid attention to technology trends and now we have apps and kiosks for self ordering. They paid attention to complaints and changes in the way people eat and see fast food. And they paid attention to the marketplace and how competitors were giving their customers what McDonald’s wasn’t. It may not always be pretty or easy to accept that business as usual has changed forever. But the better you prepare yourself and your company for change, the more likely you will expand the life cycle of your company. Don’t be afraid to get honest feedback. I’d rather clients tell me when they are displeased or over what we offer, than to wake up one day shocked that they abandoned ship.
  • Revisit your products and services each year. What are your sales indicators telling you? What are customers telling you? How are your vendors surviving? What about your competitors services or products? You can’t let what you offer become unpopular, unnecessary or out dated. Customers grow and evolve. Their tastes mature. Their needs shift. The same clients that worked with me during startup phase came back to me when I shifted to working with growth companies. My prior startup services didn’t work for them any longer because they had gotten through that phase. Now they wanted more mature or advanced solutions. Your teenager can no longer wear the same clothes as when they were 5 years old and they don’t play with the same toys any more. I get it. You may function within a niche and that niche may have been very lucrative. But what happens when customers in that niche decide your products or services are no longer required? And what happens when that pool of your target market shrinks? Are you ready for that? Can you pivot? Do an audit and make sure your services and products are necessary by your market and not just a nice to have.

Choose the Right Networks & Affinity Groups…Then Do the Work

In networks & affinity groups that you pay to belong to, who’s responsible for your growth & success?
In a recent Forbes article, the writer indicated that women stand in their own way even when they join networks and affinity groups. She intimated that it was the individuals who kept themselves from achieving success and developing real leadership skills, which kept them from excelling in the business world in the ways they should be.

Eight Bluetooth-related vulnerabilities (four that are critical) affecting over 5 billion Android, Windows and Linux devices could allow attackers to take control of devices, access corporate data and networks, and easily spread malware to other devices

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/Armis, the enterprise IoT security company, today announced the discovery of a set of zero-day Bluetooth-related vulnerabilities affecting billions of devices in use today dubbed, “BlueBorne.”

Nearly all devices with Bluetooth capabilities, including smartphones, TVs, laptops, watches, smart TVs, and even some automobile audio systems, are vulnerable to this attack. If exploited, the vulnerabilities could enable an attacker to take over devices, spread malware, or establish a “man-in-the-middle” to gain access to critical data and networks without user interaction.

The vulnerabilities were found in the Bluetooth implementations in Android, Microsoft, Linux and iOS versions pre-iOS 10. Armis reported the vulnerabilities to Google, Microsoft, and the Linux community. Google and Microsoft are releasing updates and patches on Tuesday, September 12. Others are preparing patches that are in various stages of being released.

These vulnerabilities are the most serious Bluetooth vulnerabilities identified to date. Previously identified flaws found in Bluetooth were primarily at the protocol level. These new vulnerabilities are at the implementation level, bypassing the various authentication mechanisms, and enabling a complete takeover of the target device.

These proximity-based network vulnerabilities could allow attackers to create broad malware infections that could spread from one infected device to many others by wirelessly connecting to other devices over Bluetooth. The device-to-device connectivity nature of Bluetooth means an airborne (or “BlueBorne”) attack could easily spread without any action required by a user.

“These silent attacks are invisible to traditional security controls and procedures. Companies don’t monitor these types of device-to-device connections in their environment, so they can’t see these attacks or stop them,” said Yevgeny Dibrov, CEO of Armis. “The research illustrates the types of threats facing us in this new connected age.”

There are two specific methods attackers could use with exploit code. They could:

  • Connect to the target device in an undetected manner, then remotely execute code on that device. This would allow the attacker to take full control of a system, up to and including leveraging the device to gain access to corporate networks, systems, and data.
  • Conduct a Man-in-the-Middle attack — effectively creating a Bluetooth Pineapple — to sniff traffic being sent between Bluetooth-enabled devices or spoof a legitimate Bluetooth device and hijack the connection and redirect traffic. This would enable attackers to download malware to devices and take complete control of them. This attack would not require additional hardware, as it uses the Bluetooth connection on the device against the device itself.

The automatic connectivity of Bluetooth, combined with the fact that nearly all devices have Bluetooth enabled by default, makes these vulnerabilities all the more serious and pervasive. Once a device is infected with malware, it can then easily broadcast the malware to other Bluetooth-enabled devices in its vicinity, either inside an office or in more public locations.

While waiting for the patch, users can disable Bluetooth to protect devices.
